When and How to Interpret Scripture
The bible is written in a style that us westerners aren’t familiar with. By learning a couple things about how scripture was written and expected to be received, we can glean a lot more truth even in our native languages. This message touches on the way first century believers would have interpreted the Old Testament and subsequently wrote the New. These tips will help you understand the scriptures closer to their original intent, when things are supposed to be taken literally, and when they aren’t. These are very big helps when trying to understand prophecy and the Apostle Paul.
In Galatians 5, Paul says that if you become circumcised, you're basically throwing Jesus under the bus, and you're a heretic. But then in Acts 21, he goes to the Temple and offers sacrifices for a Nazirite Vow in order to refute the misconception that he is telling Jews they need to give up circumcision. What gives?
This is a complicated subject, but it boils down to the question of "When does Torah say you are to circumcise someone?" Apart from the household of Abraham in Genesis 17, there are only two circumstances in which men are commanded to be circumcised: first, as an 8-day old boy, and second, if he wants to eat a Passover.
There is no requirement in the Law to be circumcised in order to become an Israelite or to gain salvation. That was a man-made rule. This isn't even really a Jew vs Gentile question, although it can certainly seem that way in Acts 21. Paul was telling the Galatians that if they circumcised themselves in order to be saved, they were wasting their time. Salvation is by faith, not by circumcision!

A soft answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.
Proverbs 15:1 ESV
A gentle tongue is a tree of life, but perverseness in it breaks the spirit.
Proverbs 15:4 ESV
In the house of the righteous there is much treasure, but trouble befalls the income of the wicked.
Proverbs 15:6 ESV
There are many kinds of wealth, but very little in this world is more valuable than the relationships you have with your family and neighbors. Solomon's advice will help you preserve and build those relationships instead of tearing them down.

John Calvin and Martin Luther were completely fine having individuals publicly executed for disagreeing with their doctrines. The "early church fathers" had no problem pronouncing eternal judgment on people who disagreed with their doctrines and also using violence to enforce their beliefs. Those who used violence to enforce doctrine in the first century were exclusively the bad guys so it is of the highest level of irony that once Christianity attained to power, it also resorted to violence. Let us learn the lessons of the past and greet each other with love and patience, allowing for the Holy Spirit to lead us in growth toward Yahweh and His Son.
As for the one who is weak in faith, welcome him, but not to quarrel over opinions.
Romans 14:1 ESV
Are the "weak in faith" those people who believe trying to obey the Law or in keeping those commandments that are distinctively "Jewish"? Or are they people who are so afraid of breaking an actual commandment that they add all kinds of new rules just to be safe?

What then shall we say? That the law is sin? By no means! Yet if it had not been for the law, I would not have known sin. For I would not have known what it is to covet if the law had not said, “You shall not covet.”
Romans 7:7 ESV
Reference also, James 2:8-13, Leviticus 19:13-18, and Exodus 20:13-14.
Paul plainly and strongly asserts that we are not to continue in sin once we have been saved by grace. We are not beneath the Law, but we are to live in agreement with it, because the Law tells us what sin is. Not just the ten commandments, but the whole Law, because as James explains, the Law is indivisible. If you break a commandment in Leviticus 19, it is just as much a sin as breaking a commandment in Exodus 20.
